Received as a gift, enjoyable product!, October 25, 2012

The solor retore xl+ was given to me as a gift, a very well thought out gift at that. I was leaving on a trip up the coast by train which would take 14 hours total. Why by train? Gas prices are killer! Anyways. 14 hours with nothing to do but play on my cell phone and the gift giver knew my phone was going to die 4 hours into the trip (I use my phone heavily). From first look, the device is astetically pleasing, though a bit on the large side. Opened the restore and connected the panel to it (easy enough with the spring loaded clip/link) and plugged it in to charge it with AC power (per the manual) and let it get a full charge. In about 10 hours (left it plugged in over night) the battery indicator on the back showed it had a full charge. Also, per the manual, it was suggested to FULLY drain the battery, so I plug in various devices, mp3 player, cell phone, rechargable speakers, and drained the internal 6000mah battery until it was dead. All the devices (4 of them) that I had plugged into the restore were fully charged and good to go. I then charged the restore up to 100% again overnight with AC power. I repeated the process of draining the battery by charging multiple devices with it, this time around the internal battery seemed to last longer. I assume that like with most rechargable battery items, battery life get’s better as you use it. A day before my trip I decided to try the solar charging. It recommends 14 hours for a full solar charge with the panels, so I left it on my patio while I went to work which gets get sun coverage all day here in sunny California. When I got home the battery was 75%, I assume some cloud coverage and shadows got in the way, but still not bad for being at work 9 hours. I decided to charge it up the rest of the way with AC power. While on my 14 hour train ride I was able to keep my phone from dieing and didn’t find myself twiddling my thumbs! EXCELLENT! My phone has a 1800 mah battery, the restore is 6000 mah. I had to charge my phone twice on the trip (I a! m a heavy user of my phones battery) and it still had enough juice to charge it once more! Used the restore on the trip back as well. Quite possibly close to one of the best “random / odd” gifts ever, very usulful and highly recommended. Bonus, the restore also has a LED light which is pretty bright and has a strobe, and SOS strob mode!

Good for the beach, October 23, 2012

The battery on this thing charges the iPhone around 3 times fully! Pretty good. I try to keep this charged up full for the most part(by AC). If you find your self empty and need a charge from solar, you can get around a full charge to an iPhone after this thing is in the sun for 3 hours.

Some things to keep in mind:

-Make sure the panel is connected to the main unit by pressing the button on the linker
-Direct sunlight yields better results, but this can charge from indirect too
-Battery works better over time. First charge i got around 2 full iPhones, now I get 3 full iPhones. I’ve charged and emptied about 20 times I guess
-Panel folds up on the hinge, nice, but I disconnect if I know I’m not going to need solar, like on an airplane.
-This thing can charge iPad, I only tested on my friends for a few minutes.

4.5/5… some things that could be better

-Portability as far as the folding panel. If you’re not using or don’t plan on immediate use for solar, remove it.. easier to carry.
-I could see panels cracking if you drop them on a rock… careful

Initial Review Not Awesome But Has Potential, September 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: ReVIVE Solar ReStore XL Battery Charger with 4000mAh Power Bank , Universal USB Charge Port , Rapid-Charge Adapter Panel & LED Flashlight for Smartphones , Tablets , mp3 Players , Digital Cameras & More! (Wireless Phone Accessory)

I have had my XL+ for about 10 days now and wanted to put up an initial review since there isnt much info or reviews to be found online of this unit. I purchased it off amazon with a discount code that seemed to be a pretty good price below the retail price. Without the discount I probably would not have purchased it as it is much more expensive vs other battery packs that do not have solar charging. I bought it without finding any reviews on the XL+ but still decided to purchase it based on reviews of similar products in their product line such as the XL and smaller solar charging units, as those reviews seemed fairly positive.

The unit is sleek looking, not too heavy and overall feels solid. I would expect it to hold up well over time, even when hooked onto a backpack when hiking.

It charged up pretty fast via a 1mAH usb wall charger and after a full charge overnight I set out trying it on various usb devices I have. I wasn’t able to get it to charge a few of my electronic items at all. Namely, another battery dock and my S9 bluetooth headphones. Both have mini usb to usb charging cables. I was able to get it to work well charging a 7 inch tablet I have using the tablets micro to usb charge/data cable. I was only able to get about 25% charge overnight (about 8 hours) on my touchpad using the micro to usb charge/data cable. I replicated the same result the next night, from a full charge via the usb wall charger on the solar XL+ and was again only able to get from 50% to 75% on my touchpad and the solar XL+ was completely drained. This doesn’t make sense to me – the XL+ should be able to charge my touchpad fully 2x and then some and it should be able to charge it fully in a few hours at most.

The XL+ says it outputs up to 2.1mAH which should be awesome for a tablet, but charging for 8 hours and only getting 25% increase in battery, OUCH… this is not acceptable and I am not sure why this is happening. (In the coming weeks I will test it out on an ipad 2 and see if its just not compatible with the touchpad for whatever reason)
I was able to charge a Samsung galaxy S2 from 5% to 100% in a little over 2 hours. It seemed to barely drain the XL+, so I would expect you could easily and fully charge large smartphones a few times on a fully charged XL+.

So out of the 5 devices I tried to charge – 2 wouldn’t charge at all, 2 charged ok it seemed and 1 charged only moderately at best. This is not the results I was expecting or wanted from the unit as it’s a basic usb charging station and I would expect all devices that charge via usb would be able to charge.

So now I set out to see if I could get the solar XL+ to charge via the suns rays. I set it out in bright direct summer sunlight with it already at a 50% charge that it still had from the wall socket. It blinks that its charging on the 75% indicator right away, so I let it be. Came back in a few hours (still in direct sunlight on a clear day) and it was still showing the same amount of charge, blinking on the 75%. So I moved the unit to a different location that would be getting the late afternoon sun for the next few hours and let it be. Came back and it was showing the same thing. I checked that I had the buttons right for charging, checked the solar panel connection via the little button on the unit and all seemed as it should for solar charging. After over 8 hours in direct sunlight it was still the same charge level as I started with. I didn’t use it at all that evening and so it still had the approx. 50-75% charge and I tried again in the sun the next day. It finally showed after over 16 hours in direct sunlight that it was on to charging the last LED charging indicator (the full charge LED was now blinking and the 75% LED indicator was fully lit up)… so in 16 hours of direct sunlight I was only able to charge the unit approximately 25-40% of the total capacity. NOT A GOOD SIGN, but still only a 1st try, maybe it needs to to be “broken in a little” as batteries can be finicky. Over the next few days of using it and charging it in direct sunlight Ive yet to get it to charge even close to what the box and manual says. I am a little concerned as that is being charged under “ideal” solar charging conditions – direct, non-cloudy, summer sun. I would expect it to be worse under hiking, camping or non ideal solar charging conditions and under less ideal conditions Im not sure it would be even really useable like it should be based less than stellar results I got under ideal conditions.

I also noticed that the back metal plate (most of the unit is plastic but there is sleek looking metal portion on the back of the unit) got extremely hot to the touch when in direct sunlight while charging. I also wonder how the battery holds up under this intense heat of the being out in the sun. Normally batteries and heat are not a good combo. Now it says you can charge the unit by attaching the suction…
